About the Game
The Union Pacific Big Boy 4-8-8-4 steam locomotive is a true legend of the rail world. Though only 25 examples were built in 1941 and 1944, their huge size and unique configuration has ensured that rail fans all over the world recognise the name Big Boy. The Union Pacific Class 4000 Big Boy was built specifically to be able to haul 3,300-ton freight trains over the Wasatch Mountains in Utah without assistance, while maintaining a speed of 60mph on level ground. It was found that the Big Boy was actually able to haul 4,000-ton trains on the route, though it was rarely called upon to hit 60mph. Finally retired in 1962, the class was one of the last steam locomotive types to be withdrawn from service in the US. Eight Big Boys are preserved today to be enjoyed and admired by future generations of rail fans.
